Laylatul Qadr

16 Ramadan 1446/06 March 2026

All praise is due to Allah, the Cherisher, Sustainer, Nourisher and Provider of the entire creation. May peace, blessings and salutations be upon our Beloved Prophet Muhammed ﷺ.

Alhamdulillah, we find ourselves approaching the last ten nights of Ramadan, the most blessed and spiritual nights of this sacred month. These nights are a tremendous opportunity for the believers to draw closer to Allah through increased worship, reflection, and supplication. One of the most significant and virtuous events within these last ten nights is Laylatul Qadr (The Night of Power or Decree).

The exact date of Laylatul Qadr has not been specified to us with certainty. However, our beloved Nabi ﷺ guided the Ummah on how to seek it in a Hadith narrated by Aisha (R.A) :

تَحَرَّوْا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي الْوِتْرِ مِنَ الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ
“Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan.” ~Bukhari 2017

This encourages believers to remain consistent in worship throughout the final ten nights, especially on the odd nights (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th), as any one of these nights may be Laylatul Qadr.

With regards to the virtues of this blessed night, Allah makes mention in the Holy Quran, Surah Qadr, verse 3:

لَیۡلَةُ ٱلۡقَدۡرِ خَیۡرࣱ مِّنۡ أَلۡفِ شَهۡرࣲ
“The Night of Qadr is better than a thousand months.”

The reward of witnessing this blessed night and engaging in worship during it is so great that it surpasses the reward of one thousand months (approximately 83 years) of worship. This is far greater than the average lifespan of the Ummah of Nabi ﷺ, which is generally between sixty and seventy years. Imagine the immense blessing and mercy of Allah if a person is fortunate enough to witness and benefit from this night even once in their lifetime.

Amongst the other virtues of Laylatul Qadr, we find that Abu Huraira (R.A) narrates that Nabi ﷺ mentioned:

وَمَنْ قَامَ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ
“And whoever stood for the prayers in the night of Qadr out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven.” ~ Bukhari 2014

Aisha (R.A) reports that she asked Nabi ﷺ what supplication should she recite if she came across Laylatul Qadr and Nabi ﷺ responded by saying:

تَقُولِينَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي ‏
“Say: ‘O Allah, You are Forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me.’” ~ Ibn Majah 3850

This beautiful supplication teaches us that one of the greatest acts on this night is to seek the forgiveness and mercy of Allah, acknowledging our shortcomings while turning to Him with humility and hope.

Amongst the signs of Laylatul Qadr, Allah (S.W.T) informs us in Surah Qadr, verse 5:

سَلَـٰمٌ هِىَ حَتَّىٰ مَطْلَعِ ٱلْفَجْرِ

“It is all peace until the break of dawn.”

The scholars and masters of tafsir mention narrations describing the special nature of this night. In a hadith recorded in Musnad Ahmad (Hadith 22765), Laylatul Qadr is described as a night of complete tranquility and serenity. It is a night that is neither excessively hot nor cold, and the atmosphere is filled with peace and calmness. Among the signs mentioned is that the sun rises the following morning appearing soft and without strong rays, resembling the appearance of the moon on a full moon night.

While these signs may be observed, the believer should not rely solely on them. Rather, the emphasis should be on maximizing worship throughout all the last ten nights, in the hope of attaining the blessings of Laylatul Qadr.

So what can we do during these last 10 nights:

  • Increase in our Nafl Salah
  • Increase in our Quran recitation and daily athkaar
  • Wake up our families for Tahajjud and pray together
  • Make abundant dua, seeking forgiveness and asking Allah for goodness in this life and the next

We ask the Almighty Allah to give us the strength to exert ourselves in these last 10 nights of Ramadan and allow us to witness the night of Qadr this year In sha Allah. May Allah accept our efforts from us and grant us understanding In Sha Allah!
