بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
16 Dhul Hijjah 1446/13 June 2025
All praise is due to Allah ﷻ , the Cherisher, Sustainer, Nourisher and Provider of the entire creation. May peace, blessings and salutations be upon our Beloved Prophet Muhammed ﷺ.
Islam is the universal system and order of commitment to the Almighty and it is the manifestation of one’s submission to God in all aspects and facets of life. A believer endeavors to live his/her life in a way that is consistent with the values and teachings of the Islamic faith, with the ultimate aim of pleasing Allah and gaining Allah’s favour and acceptance.
We find that many scholars have identified four fundamental branches of our Deen:
- Mu’aasharaat (معاشرات ) : This refers to our social dealings, how we interact and behave with one another.
- Muamalaat (معاملات): This refers to our financial dealings, how we interact with one another from a financial perspective.
- Ibaadaat (عبادات): This refers to how we conduct ourselves in fulfilling right of Allah with regards to our ibadat.
- Siyasat (سياسات): This refers to our political lives.
In a world filled with diverse identities and affiliations, our identity as Muslims stands as a profound anchor that shapes our worldview, actions, and purpose in life.
What is the identity of a Muslim ?
- Believing there is no diety other than Allah ﷻ and believing that the Prophet Muhammed ﷺ is the final messenger.
- Praying Salah 5 times every single day.
- Allah ﷻ has honored the Muslim ummah by designating it as the best of nations, In Surah Al-Imraan, verse 110, Allah ﷻ says:
كُنتُمۡ خَيۡرَ أُمَّةٍ أُخۡرِجَتۡ لِلنَّاسِ تَأۡمُرُونَ بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِ وَتَنۡهَوۡنَ عَنِ ٱلۡمُنكَرِ وَتُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِۗ
You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah.
- A Muslim is one who is kind and compassionate and one who stays away from foul and vulgar language.
- A Muslim is one who looks out for his neighbours and community and not a person who looks to cause chaos.
- A Muslim is one who tends to be more selfless than selfish.
- A Muslim is one who wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself. ~ Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 13
- A Muslim promotes diversity and equality and does not look down on others based on their race, gender, ethnicity or background. Allah ﷻ mentions in Surah Hujarat, Verse 13:
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse reminds us that despite our differences in culture, language, and customs, we are bound by a common faith and purpose. Our identity as Muslims transcends these differences, creating a global community united in worship of Allah.
- A Muslim stands up and raises concern in the face of oppression regardless of a persons religion, background our ethnicity.
The above mentioned are just some traits of a Muslim. This is our identity. Do not be shy to show you are Muslim. When the time for Salah enters, no matter where we are or who we are with, a concerned after should be made to pray.
When an injustice against us occurs, meaning if someone harms us or hurts us, how do respond ? Do we respond in turn with vulgar and violence like the west or do we respond with something better as the Quran teaches us ? Without a doubt, with something better.
The way we behave and interact has an effect on those around us. Be the beacon of light which illuminates the hearts of others not the fire which ignites their soul.
We ask Allah ﷻ to allow us to be proud of our identity as Muslims. May Allah ﷻ accept our efforts from us and grant us understanding In Sha Allah!
