All praise is due to Allah, the Cherisher, Sustainer, Nourisher and Provider of the entire creation. May peace, blessings and salutations be upon our Beloved Prophet Muhammed ﷺ.
Alhamdulilah, we find ourselves within the month of August, a month which is know as women’s month, a month where a whole day is dedicated to women, known as “Women’s Day”.
We find that people in society make absurd statements such as “Islam oppresses women” or “Islam do not give women the same rights as men”, amongst many others. As Muslims, in reality we know that this is the furthest from the truth.
One of the initial arguments made in the Quran against the obvious inequalities of pre-Islamic society was a criticism of how women were treated, especially young girls who were treated as nothing more than a burden financially. Thus, the awful crime of female infanticide was justified and carried out without repercussion. It is mentioned in Surah 16, Verse 58-59:
وَإِذَا بُشِّرَ أَحَدُهُم بِٱلْأُنثَىٰ ظَلَّ وَجْهُهُۥ مُسْوَدًّۭا وَهُوَ كَظِيمٌۭ
“Whenever one of them is given the good news of a baby girl, his face grows gloomy, as he suppresses his rage.”
يَتَوَٰرَىٰ مِنَ ٱلْقَوْمِ مِن سُوٓءِ مَا بُشِّرَ بِهِۦٓ ۚ أَيُمْسِكُهُۥ عَلَىٰ هُونٍ أَمْ يَدُسُّهُۥ فِى ٱلتُّرَابِ ۗ أَلَا سَآءَ مَا يَحْكُمُونَ
“He hides himself from the people because of the bad news he has received. Should he keep her in disgrace, or bury her alive in the ground? Evil indeed is their judgment!”
With the advent of Islam, Nabi ﷺ brought honour to all women such that the paradise lies under the feet of the mother (Sunan-an-Nisai 3104), the wife completes half of his faith (Mu’jam al Awsat 992) and the daughter is ones most precious companion (Musnad Ahmed 17373).
It was narrated from Abdullah bin Amr (R.A) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“ خِيَارُكُمْ خِيَارُكُمْ لِنِسَائِهِمْ ” .
“The best of you are those who are best to their womenfolk.” – Sunan Ibn Majah 1978
From the above, we have a clear indication that despite what society feels, Muslims honour and give high due and respect to the women of the household.
May Allah accept our efforts from us and grant us understanding In Sha Allah!
