Refinement of Character

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

All praise is due to Allah, the Cherisher, Sustainer, Nourisher and Provider
of the entire creation. May peace, blessings and salutations be upon our
Beloved Prophet Muhammed .

As the month of Ramadan draws closer, many of us may find ourselves looking back at our lives trying to identify flaws in our behaviour and are constantly looking for ways to improve, not only as Muslims but as human beings. One of the ways we can do this is through the refinement of our character and aligning it with the best role model for us.

Nabi is without a doubt the best of role models for us in every aspect of our lives. The evidence of this is found in the Quran. Allah (SWT) mentions in the Quran in Surah Al-Ahzab verse 21:

لَّقَدۡ كَانَ لَكُمۡ فِى رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ أُسۡوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ

“There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent
pattern. “

Allah also makes mention in Surah Al-Qalam verse 4, in relation to Nabi :

وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِیم

“And indeed, you are of a great moral character.”

Unfortunately in today’s time, we look up to celebrities or modern-day
influencers and make them our role models. We want to imitate the way they
dress and the way they communicate with others to look cool and to be accepted in society. Without realization, this is one of the main reasons for us
drifting away from the Prophetic ﷺ methodology.

When we speak of the Sunnah of Nabi , we not only speak of growing a beard or making use of a miswaak, it also entails following the Prophetic methodology of communication and behaviour. This is one of the most forgotten and one of the most crucial aspects of The Sunnah Methodology. If we look through the life of the Nabi we will notice that the Nabi never resorted to the use of vulgar language or violence even towards his greatest enemies.

Being in a state of peace and refraining from vulgarity and violence towards
those that harm us allows for the angels to respond on our behalf. We
understand this from a Hadith found in Sunnan Abi Dawud (4896) where Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A) was sitting in the companionship of the Nabi . A man insulted Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A) twice, he remained calm and silent. The man then insulted Abu Bakr (R.A) for a third time and that’s when Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A) responded. After he responded,  the Nabi stood up and walked away, when Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A) enquired as to why the Nabi walked away, the Nabi said that when he was silent, an angel descended from the heavens and was responding on his behalf and when Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A.) responded the angel went back and the Shaytan descended. The
beloved  Nabi did not want to be in a place where the angel left and the Shaytan rushed towards.

The abovementioned is just one of the ways we can align our character with
the Prophetic methodology. By refining the manner in which we carry ourselves and speak with others, and aligning it with the Sunnah we will uplift the name of Islam and we show the world what Islam truly is. Sometimes, we may become irritated or angry by what others say to us, but it is the way we deal with our emotions that matters. If we replace the use of vulgarity with the recitation of Ayatul Kursi or durood upon the Nabi or even going to make a fresh wudhu to calm down, we will find that many of our problems and
conflicts will be resolved.

We ask Allah to grant us all the ability to implement the Sunnah of the Nabi
in all aspects of our life and may Allah make it such that through us, people see the true reality and beauty of Islam.

We ask Allah to accept our efforts from us In Sha Allah!
